Philodendron Joepii is a rare and highly sought-after species within the Philodendron genus.

Joepii was named in honor of  botanist and naturalist Dr. Joep Moonen, who made significant contributions to the study of plants in French Guiana. Dr. Moonen is known for his extensive fieldwork, exploration, and research in the region's rainforests, contributing to the understanding of its biodiversity. It was discovered in eastern French Guiana by Joep Moonen during an ecological tour of the Mararoni River. It is said that Philodendron Joepii is nearly extinct in the wild and that this species is believed to be a natural hybrid in the pedatum complex but it's true origin isn't certain.


Philodendron joepii is an evergreen climbing hemiepiphyte. Hemiepiphytes are plants with two growth phases- terrestrial i.e. living on land and epiphyte i.e. a plant that grows on another plant without being parasitic in nature. Like other philodendrons P. joepii morphs. The plant looks different during the seedling, juvenile, and mature stages of its life.

Given its relative rarity and limited distribution, Philodendron joepii remains a highly prized and coveted plant among enthusiasts and collectors. Its unique characteristics eaten leaf shape contributed to its popularity in the world of tropical houseplants.

Care and Growing Tips

  • The plant thrives in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight should be avoided, as it can cause the leaves to scorch or become discolored.
  • The plant needs to be watered every 1-2 weeks. The frequency of watering must be doubled with increased light.
  • The plant grows best in loose, well-drained soil which is rich high in organic matter. It also be grow in 100% sphagnum peat moss and mixtures such as peat-vermiculite or peat-perlite.
  • The plant benefits from repotting to a larger container when they become root bound and outgrow the original pot.
  • The plant likes warm temps (65-85°).
  • Humidity levels from 45-65% is good for this plant.
  • Philodendron plants are very fast-growing plants; they can grow up to a few inches a week
  • during the spring and summer growing seasons. we suggest using a diluted fertilizer wih waterings during the growing season.

  • While this generally unfussy plant can survive in low light, it grows faster (and will stay healthier) in bright indirect light.
